The Ideal Business

Today’s economic world presents us with many business opportunities. The opportunities thus offered are so lucrative and promising that it arouses serious questions on whether the code of ethics for doing business can be followed by the book. It is however dependant on the point of view and one ethic may not translate itself in the same way for one as it had done for someone else. As a Christian, one needs to live by the plan God has made for us. Christian livingensures that we all fall under his grace and live a life which will end with deliverance rather than purgation.

As a Christian, it would always sting to be the owner of an alcohol or a tobacco outlet, or the owner of a book store with objectionable and pornographic material and literature on display and sale. It would also feel wrong to own a site full of fraud or pornography, no matter how much profit it helps you make. Even if you finance such businesses, you are indirectly becoming a part of it which is again not worthy of a true god-fearing Christian.

Christianity is a religion based on faith. Faith that the savior, Lord Jesus Christ, is the Son of God sent to free us of our sins. He saved humanity from the wrath of the Almighty and to remain in His grace we must lead a life which is closer to Christ—drink his blood and consume his flesh and be a part of Him. Christian Newspapers have taken up the initiative to educate the people on the values and morals of Christianity. Taking into account the overwhelming number of people online, the papers have a sizeable online presence.

So what better business to do in a more Christian way than the business of the compiling, publishing and circulating of Christian News papers? This practice, let’s say, ‘goes-by-the-book’—the Holy Book. By being a part of it, you are actually doing charity and helping others. The rate of the paper should not be too high and all employees treated with respect and care. The paper used should be recyclable and eco-friendly. This is the only way to be able to be in the service of the Lord and make a living out of it via ethical and honest means. Make a living and spread the word and love of God—is there a better life than this?

The Future Of Ethical Footwear

Whilst there is plenty of talk about the environmental and ethical impact of the clothes that we wear including the use of pesticides to grow cotton, the energy intensive manufacture of synthetic fabrics and the fast fashion culture which commits thousands of tonnes of textile waste to landfill, we often forget about our shoes and footwear which is just as essential to every day life as clothing and has just as much impact.

The majority of shoes are made from either leather or synthetic materials both of which have huge environmental impacts. Leather is usually tanned using a process which causes damage to the health of the people involved and to the surrounding environment. The tanning uses chemicals including lead, zinc, formaldehyde, dyes and cyanide-based chemicals. Shoes are also often glued together using benzene which is highly toxic and damaging to the health of the workers. Synthetic materials are usually not biodegradable making them difficult to dispose of and also sometimes contain toxic chemicals like phthalates which are damaging to health and the environment in a number of ways. So how is likely is it that there will be more ethical footwear available in the future?

Well there are already a number of companies which specialise in ethical footwear and manufacture shoes using a variety of materials and methods which have a lesser impact on the environment. Po Zu Ecological shoes makes shoes using a variety of natural materials including cork, organic hemp, natural latex, coconut husk and vegetable tanned leather. They using stitching instead of glue to make the shoes and the factory follows strict ethical guidelines. The shoes are made to for comfort and durability so that they should have a long life span but when their useful life is over they easily biodegrade.

Brands like Po-Zu are taking big steps forward in the manufacture of ethical footwear but there is still a long way to go in finding the perfect ethical and eco friendly material to make the shoes from.
Whilst materials like hemp and cork are both incredibly sustainable, they are unlikely to ever replace leather which is favoured for its appearance and durability. Vegetable tanned leather is a better alternative than conventionally tanned leather but still has an environmental impact associated with the rearing of animals and for many there are ethical issues surrounding the welfare of the animals.

One of the changes that would help the growth of ethical footwear would be change in attitude to the buying of footwear. Footwear can be considered as part of the fast fashion culture and throw away society where low cost shoes are purchased in line with the current trends and thrown away after a few wears. The second hand market for shoes is even less than with clothes. If people could consider an investment which they will keep for many years to come then they may not mind paying a little extra to ensure both quality and that the shoes have been ethically manufactured. The longer life span of shoes would then cut down on waste.

There are a number of potential materials that could be used to make ethical footwear and shoes in the future although there is still some way to go before these materials become completely commercially viable. The ideal material would need to be strong, breathable, durable and look great when made into shoes.

Fish leather is one possible solution. It is made using fish skin which is a by product of the fish industry and it is also really strong. The tanning process also does not use toxic chemicals. At the moment, it is mainly used for products like purses. Ocean leather is another possible solution which is made from kelp but is still in the very early stages of development.

Ethical Trends in Residential Flooring

People are becoming more and more interested in choosing ethical alternatives in home remodeling materials, and residential flooring is no exception. Flooring is such a large part of redoing a room or home that it makes a big difference when you make careful choices. If you want to find the best flooring to protect the environment, there are a few factors to consider.

Sustainability

The term “sustainability” is a fuzzy one, but it generally means that the resources and environment of the future should be at least as good, if not better than, the present. To contribute to sustainability, residential flooring must not take away from the viability of a natural resource that presently exists. For example, using exotic tropical hardwoods indiscriminately is not sustainable because the rainforests will soon be depleted if the practice goes on unchecked.

A good use of renewable resources in flooring is bamboo residential flooring. Bamboo grows very quickly and makes a strong and sturdy floor. Bamboo comes to maturity in 4 to 5 years of growth. Even after it is harvested, it keeps growing, putting on new shoots and adding more mass. Bamboo is the best hardwood-type flooring alternative when it comes to quickly renewing sources.

Eco-Friendly

Another term that is up for interpretation is “eco-friendly.” The main idea here is that the residential flooring type should not harm the environment. A flooring type that is made of harmful chemicals might be detrimental to the land, water or air as it is dumped in a landfill and as it decomposes. Flooring that will decay and go back to the earth naturally is eco-friendly in that it does not have a negative impact on the environment.
For example, a cork floor will disintegrate to dust if it is allowed to decompose completely. There should be no harmful residue of any unnatural substance left when the floor is gone.

Energy Efficient

Radiant flooring is an energy efficient way to heat or cool a room, along with supplying a surface to walk on. Solar tiles do the same thing, and the energy of the sun gives them their power. These new residential flooring options give homeowners a way to incorporate thermal control with their floor coverings.
Yet, there is more to energy efficiency than radiant floors and solar tiles. Some flooring is good for energy efficiency because of its very nature. A tiled or stone floor will keep the residents of a home cool so that they will feel more comfortable without setting their air conditioner at a lower temperature. When you consider all the ethical considerations in making your residential flooring decisions, you will not only save yourself some money, but you will also become a better citizen of the world.

The Rise of Ethical Fashion

To some people they think fashion and they think health-obsessed models, but fashion likes to show its softer side now and again, too. In recent years, Erin O’Connor and many other fashion icons have encouraged designers to move away from ‘size zero’ models and the 90s saw supermodels shunning fur. Increasingly, ethics have been taken into consideration across the industry, from Prada to Primark.

So, why are retailers and designers so keen to shout about the green, ethical benefits as well as the clothes themselves? Maybe to downsize the moral panics that many associate with fashion, but shouldn’t their efforts be concerned with making the clothes and not moralising the masses? Organically grown cotton is used widely among many designers and labels, and it may be grown by fairly paid workers, but at what cost to the environment? Air freighting such organic goods is bound to leave a bad taste in any green-conscious member of the fash pack looking to reduce their carbon footprint. In February 2010, online clothing success ASOS launched its own ‘Green Room’, a whole section devoted to ethical fashion. Despite these considerate gestures to the fashion industry, to what extent is it really helping? Buying a fair-trade cotton t-shirt from ASOS’ ‘Green Room’ isn’t going to lift people out of poverty.

As well as the use of organic materials and using more ‘ethical’ methods, the fashion industry has also seen a rise in vintage clothing. Swap-shops and vintage boutiques have become rapidly popular in recent years, with celebrities such as Lily Allen opening their own shops specialising in vintage clothing.
This is far more environmentally friendly that air-freighting organic materials across the world, and in some cases is much cheaper and guilt-free.

Fashion should be about artistic talent- not about worrying where the clothes have come from and how many air miles it took to get it here. The fun of the industry should be re-captured as it has lost some of the joy associated with it by trying too hard to convince us all of its’ clean image.

To this effect, we have lost sight to what fashion is really all about. When the focus of it moves from creating something beautiful that makes people happy into more political and social issues, it becomes something different and the creativeness is drained from it. Fashion can’t change the world on its own regarding poverty, only people can do that. However, fashion can certainly make us better dressed.
